Family frame: a hybrid tutorial

Today, I am sharing a tutorial over at the Mouse, Paper, Lovely blog. This is a very cool blog of Jessica Sprague’ that features all things hybrid, and they have freebies and tutorials every week! Our creative team is amazing and you will find endless inspiration there…

This is the first time I have ever done a tutorial like this, so let me know if it works for you :)

For my tutorial, I chose to make a hybrid layout. Most of my scrapbooking layouts get preserved in albums. Once in a while though, I like to make something extra special, and frame it for display, just so that I get to enjoy it that much more!

This hybrid layout  measures 8.5 by 11 inches. Since I wanted to use so many different sized tags in this layout, I started it digitally to make sure everything was aligned perfectly. I also used these brand new, amazing overlays by Jodie Lee (that will be available on May 30) to create an extra layer of depth on this layout. After choosing all my papers and tags, this is how my digital layout looked,

While printing, I split the layout into two different groups, one as the inner rectangle that contained all the tags and one as just the background. This is how I printed them out,

(for this, you might want to save your file first, and open a copy of the file, and simply close the eye of the layers you dont want and hit print)

Once everything was printed out, I was now ready to embellish the layout. The fun part :)

I trimmed out my rectangle with the tags. You could use a scalloped or any decorative scissors here if you wanted, I chose to keep it simple and used straight scissors. To embroider the heart around the word “love”, I used a paper piecer to make equally spaced holes. Embroidering paper is much easier if you use a paper piercer on it first.

Since I had only white floss at home, after embroidering, I colored the floss using an ink pad and cotton swab. Just dip the cotton swab in the ink pad, and then lightly rub it on the stitches. You may not get the color you want at first, but give the ink a few seconds to dry and then go back a second time and recolor the stitches. I later used some Sharpie markers on the inked stitches too, just to add another layer of color depth. I am not a great stamper and don’t own any Copic markers, but I am pretty sure those would work here as well.

I then added some buttons, a flower (which you can see better in the next couple of photos) and some handwritten journaling to the layout.

Once I was satisfied with the layout, I adhered it to the background paper using lots of foam tape to give a nice depth,

I fussy cut a flower, and adhered that with more foam tape here,

And added some buttons,

And this is how it looks all framed up,
