Butterfly Dresser: Decoupage with Paper

If you are looking to transform a garage sale find, this how to decoupage with paper tutorial will inspire you!- I recently created this Butterfly dresser for my daughter’s room- altering it with just paper & glue!

I picked up this dresser last year at a garage sale intending to do something like this DIY Nightstand Makeover using Chalk Paint. But my daughter loved the teal color so much, she didn’t want it to be painted over. So we decided to stick butterflies all over it instead 🙂

Decoupage with Paper:

For this Butterfly Dresser, I decided to decoupage with paper. I thought it would definitely be quicker than painting or drawing butterflies. I used a die cut machine and cut many many butterflies from pretty patterned papers while enjoying an afternoon crafting.

This is a very simple idea, all you need is paper, mod podge, a die cutting machine, and some patience. Not even a lot of patience- because this is such a fun project it does not seem tedious at all!

How to make this Butterfly Dresser:

This is a quick makeover that uses patterned paper butterfly shapes. You could also use paper napkins, printed stickers or any other such butterfly designs you might have.

  • Clean the front of the drawers with a wet cloth and let dry.
  • Remove all the hardware
  • Distress the drawer fronts lightly using sandpaper.
  • Start adding the paper butterflies by applying Mod podge onto the drawer front and onto the back of each butterfly. Adhere creating a random pattern.
  • Fill in the empty space between with white paint lines using a paintbrush here but you could easily use a paint marker these days.
  • Finish off the dresser with an even layer of mod Podge on top as a sealer and this dresser will last for years to come!
