So many of you have loved my Chunky Knit Pillow, so today I’ll show you how to knit a chunky blanket with a video tutorial The pattern is so simple and comforting that I hope you will have fun making it 🙂

HOW DO YOU MAKE A CHEAP CHUNKY BLANKET?

I honestly can’t say that I have ever made a cheap yarn project. My husband can easily vouch for that 😉

But for this Cheap Chunky Blanket, I am using basic acrylic wool here today instead of the super expensive roving wool. Which makes this project much more affordable in my opinion.

HOW MUCH YARN TO I NEED FOR THIS CHUNKY KNIT BLANKET PATTERN?

You will need 4 skeins each of the Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn in Madison Mustard, Los Angeles Tan, and San Diego Navy colors. That’s a total of 12 skeins to create the color block pattern seen. If you were to make this blanket in one solid color you will still need 12 skeins of yarn. Below is a list of everything:

I chose a fall/autumn colorway for this Chunky Knit blanket pattern. I personally buy most of my yarn online, and beef up my yarn stash during sales #notsponsored

• Cream– Lion Brand Yarn 135-099L Hometown USA Yarn, Los Angeles Tan
• Yellow- Lion Brand Yarn 135-159 Hometown Yarn, Madison Mustard
• Dark Blue- Lion Brand Yarn 135-111L Hometown Yarn, San Diego Navy
• Knitter’s Pride-Basix Fixed Circular Needles 32″, Size 50/25mm

WHAT KNITTING NEEDLE TO USE:

You’ll need this 32 inches long 25mm circular needle US 50 for this Chunky knit blanket pattern. You knit back and forth on the circular needle and not in the round. The circular needle is simply to accommodate a large number of stitches.

1. How many stitches do you need for a Chunky Blanket?

You start by casting on just 50 stitches while holding two strands of yarn together. Learn how about Knitting With Multiple Strands Of Yarn Easily

Use a circular knitting needle, but make sure to knit back and forth and not in the round.

The large needle feels bulky and unusual while first knitting. But by the time you are 10 rows down, you will have got the hang of it and will be a pro!

Change colors every 20 rows for this color block pattern

Cast off loosely and evenly to create a beautiful finished edge.

And that is how you knit a chunky blanket! This one is super cuddly and you’ll really want to snuggle into it

The finished blanket measures 50 inches by 60 inches and is a great throw size on our King Size Bed. For a King size, knitting this chunky blanket is a quicker option for sure.

CHUNKY KNIT BLANKET PATTERN:

Makes one blanket measuring 50 by 60 inches.

The entire project is knit with two strands of yarn held together as one (a double strand if you may) to create the chunky stitches

Gauge is approximately- 4 sts= 4 inches and 4 rows= 4 inches in Stockinette stitch

Cast on 50 stitches on the US 50 size circular needle using two strands of Color A (Mustard)

Row 1: Knit all stitches

Row 2: K1, Bring yarn to the front of work, Purl till the last stitch, bring yarn to the back of work, K1

Work in pattern (Repeat Rows 1 and 2), till you have 20 rows of Color A.

Switch to Color B (Tan) and work in pattern for 20 more rows

Switch to Color C (Navy) and work in pattern for 20 more rows.

Cast off loosely

Weave in stray yarn ends.

Tips to knit a chunky blanket

• When you work with two strands of yarn, the yarn balls tend to get twisted. I like to place each skein of yarn in a separate drawstring bag of its own. After that, I find the yarn twisting and knotting to be minimal.
• You will need to join in new yarn skeins and change colors. Watch my video to see how I do it!
• Even though you use two new skeins, you might find that one skein runs faster than the other. In that case, you might want to join a new skein in the middle of the row (on the reverse side)
• If you have the Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn skeins that can easily be substituted instead of the Hometown USA yarn.

NOTES:

1. Easily adapt this blanket pattern to suit your color needs. Make it the colors of your favorite sports team or school!
2. If you are an absolute beginner, I would recommend you make this entire blanket with just knits like in this Garter Stitch Blanket. And in one solid color itself. What that means is that you buy 12 skeins of a single color of yarn and knit all rows with NO purling.
3. This blanket is very easy to resize to create what you need. 50 stitches cast on gives you a 50-inch wide blanket. Every 10 rows in Stockinette Stitch measures approximately 10 inches tall.
4. To determine how much yarn you will need, at 50 stitches wide, I used 2 skeins of yarn for every 10 rows.
5. For instance, if you want to make a Crib size blanket of 45 by 60 inches, you’ll need to cast on 45 stitches and work 60 rows tall. You’ll still need 12 skeins of yarn but will have a bit leftover.
6. With just 6 skeins of yarn, you might be able to make 30 inches by 48-inch throw. Start by casting on 30 stitches and work 16 rows in each color.
