Colorful Crochet Striped Blanket Pattern

I’m sharing a colorful and simple crochet striped blanket pattern today that is light and airy. You can mix and match colorful yarns at the store, or go shopping in your stash to pick random odd balls of left over yarn and make this blanket.

March is International Crochet Month, and I’m so excited to be sharing this simple and truly versatile pattern to make a striped crochet blanket. I love making handmade blankets, and this one has a one stitch pattern that is mindless and easy to remember. There is something so relaxing and satisfying in making a blanket, I hope you enjoy this post.

What You Will Need:

For this Colorful Crochet Striped Blanket Pattern, I actually chose to use a bunch of random Scrap Yarns. At our local library they have a knitting club and they had this box of yarn from which I selected a few different colors- keeping in mind to choose mostly worsted 4 medium weight yarns.

For a Medium 4 yarn, you would use a H8 5mm or I 9 5.5mm size hook, but I moved up to a size K 6.5mm hook instead. The bigger K hook creates larger stitches that are airy and hence we make a light blanket instead of a dense one.

My finished Striped Blanket measured about 40 by 48 inches, and I had a bit of yarn left over actually. You can easily choose to make this a square blanket measuring 40 by 40 inches instead.

Here is how my gauge measured, with the size K hook. Measure your work and adjust accordingly.

16 dcs = 5 inch

10 dcs = 3 inches

Begin your blanket with a starting chain of 99 + 2 = 101 chains. If you are beginner, this post shows how to start your chain for crochet.

Dc into third chain from hook and every chain till end (99 dcs). Turn

Pattern Row: Chain 2 (turning chain, count as a dc), skip first dc, dc into next and every dc till end of row (99 dcs)

Work in a random stripe pattern, changing colors as often as you want.

Work for a total of 72 rows (48 inches long) or 60 rows (40 inches)

TIP:

  • Create your starting chain loosely, if not the bottom of your blanket will bunch up and not lay flat.
  • Since you will be using a larger hook for a worsted weight 4 yarn, try a few different hook styles- I tried a bamboo, metal and lighted hook of the same size and felt the bamboo one caught the yarn less and easy to use.
  • If you are unsure of when to change colors, use a stripe pattern generator www.randomstripes.com to create a unique stripe design.

Thank you for stopping by today friends, and I hope you give this Crochet Striped Blanket Pattern a try. It is a very simple pattern, but by sizing up in the hook size the fabric created has a nice drape and is not thick and stiff. You can make this as colorful as you can or keep it simple and just use 2 or 3 colors of your choice.

  1. hi! love the colors the colors and the openness of your stitches. I understand this was made as a scrap buster, but do you know the approx yardage needed for the size you made? thank you and happy spring stitching! Jen

    • Hi Jen!

If you were to use a Vanna’s choice or Loops and Threads Impeccable like worsted weight 4 yarn, I would think you could make this with 4 or 5 skeins. 6 skeins tops. I recently learnt that I can weigh my yarn at home and estimate the yardage and will try to that for my next patterns. Sorry I don’t have an exact number for the yarn required for this pattern.
