What Do You Need To Start Crocheting For Beginners?
To crochet, all you need is a ball of yarn and a crochet hook
That said, there are a lot of different yarns and crochet hooks available in the stores these day, and the choices can seem overwhelming So what do you need to start crocheting as a beginnner- let me simplify that further for you.
What yarn is best for beginner crochet?
Yarns come in different varieties, I recommend you choose something thicker when you are starting out. You will have larger stitches that are easier to learn from with thicker yarns, whereas thinner yarn can be a bit challenging at first.
While you are at the store, look at the yarn label of a yarn you like. For a beginner I would recommend buying a Medium 4, Bulky 5 or Super Bulky 6 yarn. These are all great choices!
To go along with you yarn you will need an appropriate size crochet hook. The yarn label will also have a recommended hook size like shown below. In general for a Medium 4 yarn a crochet hook that is US H/8 5mm works well.
This Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn is a great Super Bulky 6 yarn that works well with a N or P hook size. This yarn is so bulky, the larger P hook actually looks better with it. Other yarns you could use are Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn or Lion Brand Yarn Hometown Yarn
No, unlike knitting, crocheting uses only a single hook.
At what age should you start crocheting?
I taught both my daughters to start crocheting in their tween years.
