What You Will Need:
Dishcloths are generally made with any brand cotton yarn, as they absorb water better and create such a soft fabric swatch. Today, I used the Mainstays 100% cotton yarn in Opaline green color – it’s such a pretty color yarn. This is a medium 4 yarn that is so soft to the touch because it is all cotton and such a joy to crochet with. You will also need a size H, 5mm hook.

Single Crochet Dishcloth For Beginners
Chain 28 loosely. I’ve shared a step by step tutorial explaining How To Start Chain Crochet Beginner Video that you can refer to if needed.
Keeping your chains loosely will ensure that the dishcloth edges remain straight and the stitches don’t bunch up. If you are a tight crocheter, try sizing up a hook size for just the starting chain to get loose chains.

Row 1: Sc into the second chain from the hook and then into every chain. (27scs). If you are a beginner, count the scs to make sure you have 27 and not lost any stitches.

Row 2: Turn work. Chain 1. Sc into first and every sc below to maintain 27 scs

Work for 30 rows in total, or until you create a square shape as per the tension of your stitches.

When you come to the last stitch on the last row here is how you end your dishcloth.

Insert your hook into the last stitch and pull up a loop as usual.

Then cut off your working yarn leaving a 3-inch tail. Pull the yarn through the last two loops and fasten off. Weave in the tail.

tips
Maintaining a neat crisp, straight edge is not as easy as it seems. Below, I somehow lost a few stitches, oops. Here are some tips to help you avoid that mistake and maintain a neat crisp straight edge.

- Make sure to count: Every few rows, make sure to count the stitches and ensure you have 27 stitches. If you drop stitches your finished work will look wonky.
- Place your work down every few rows and observe: If you work non stop for 10- 15 rows without a pause, you might miss any mistakes you’ve made. Instead, every 4 or 5 rows, make it a point to place your work into a flat surface, and ensure that single crochet dishcloth has straight edges. Take a photo if needed to get a clearer picture.
- Chain 1: Your ch1 at the beginning of each turn ensures that your first sc isn’t squished and maintains proper height. After your ch1, you need to insert your hook into the very first stitch. Don’t skip the first stitch when you turn!
