This pattern is a solid take on the quintessential basic granny square pattern is is much softer due to the yarn we use.
What You Will Need:
To crochet this granny square dishcloth, you’ll need:
- Cotton yarn (worsted weight works best for dishcloths) – You will need a 2oz (or 56g) ball of yarn for one dishcloth. I’m using this Peaches & Crème Stripey Cotton Yarn but you could use Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn too
- Crochet hook (size recommended on yarn skein)- I’m using a G 4mm crochet hook a size smaller than recommended to keep my stitches small and neat.
- Scissors
Cotton yarn is ideal because it’s absorbent, durable, and easy to wash.

Crochet Granny Square Dishcloth Tutorial:
This crochet granny square dishcloth is very beginner friendly. Before you begin, you will need to know how make to double crochet stitch (dc), how to do the chain stitch (ch), and how to make a slip knot. Mastering these stitches will make this project feel much easier and enjoyable.
Here are the instructions for this dishcloth.
The pattern goes like this, first make a magic ring or create 4 chains and sl st to the first ch to make a loop.
Then in the first round itself we make a square by creating 3 clusters of 3 dcs with ch2 corners. Exact pattern can be found in the printable pdf.

Then you simply repeat the growth sequence of : 2dc, ch2, dc into each chain space to keep growing your dishcloth.

Here is how it looks after 6 rounds.

Here is how it looks after 9 rounds. I added a single crochet border to keep the edges neat.

And your dishcloth is complete! Unlike my basic granny square pattern this crochet granny square dishcloth is not full of holes and has more solid spaces making it ideal for dishclothes.
