It’s December and for us makers, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, isn’t it? There are so many gifts to make, lists to write and new craft supplies to be bought. But it can all quickly go south if the projects take too long. I have learned from my previous years to keep it simple. Keep it quick but classy. So today I am sharing a Quick Knit scarf with a free pattern that you can whip up in under an hour. If you have never knit before, start with this How to Knit a Scarf Tutorial that explains it all.

Can you knit a scarf in a day?

Yes! The trick is to use a big knitting needle and bulky yarn. The yarn I used here is a Super Bulky yarn (yes, its a thing) and I used only One Skein to make this scarf. I added an extra fringe but used some leftover yarn to do that.

how much yarn to knit a scarf?

For my scarf today I used just one Skein of Loops and Threads Phat yarn in the color black. This yarn is discontinued, but you can use this Bernat Mega Bulky yarn instead. If you want to add the fringe, you will need another color yarn as well.

This scarf uses a 15mm of Size 19 size knitting needle!

This is a SUPER bulky yarn- and it’s really really soft and such a joy to knit with.

How many stitches should I cast on for a chunky scarf?

I started this scarf by casting on 8 stitches on a Size 19, 15mm needle. This makes an approximately 6-inch wide scarf.

Knit the first two rows. This gives a neat ridge at the bottom of the scarf, and also prevents the scarf fabric from curling.

Next, continue in stockinette stitch till you almost run out of yarn. Finish off the scarf with another two rows of garter stitch and bind off.

This makes a nice chunky scarf, that is soft and beautiful! You can continue knitting to make this a longer scarf if needed.

I finished off by adding a contrasting color fringe to both edges of the quick knit scarf. Learn more about fringes in this tutorial -> Easy Way Of Adding Fringe To Scarves

All done!

Ta-da! Your quick knit scarf is ready! For me, the fringe is the best part of the scarf. But this yarn knits up so beautifully, the large knit stitches make it look like a boutique product.
