Starting a new hobby? In today’s knitting beginner post, let me answer the question, “What do I need to start knitting?”
If you are ready to learn to knit, it’s now time to talk supplies. There are so many options for yarn and needles at the craft store, let go shopping!

what do i need to start knitting?
To start knitting, you need only 3 simply supplies- some yarn, knitting needles and a pair of scissors. Your grandmothers knitting needle will work just fine for this, but you will need to have a yarn that works with that needle. Let me explain in depth below.

1. A skein of yarn:
Yarn comes in many different fibers and thicknesses. An acrylic yarn is comparatively cheaper than a wool yarn and a great place to start learning. a new craft. A skein of yarn in a color that makes you happy (thicker yarn weight is best for beginners). For beginners I always suggest this Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn. It is a bulky yarn which will help you learn your first stitches easily. This yarn is easily available in Michaels Craft store.

The yarn skein’s label will have info regarding needle size. The needle suggested for this one is a Size 13, 9 mm. A bulky weight yarn will use a thick needle, if you have a thinner yarn at home, you will need smaller needles.

2. A pair of knitting needles:
Knitting needles always come in pairs, as in you will need 2 matching needles. I would recommend this pair of knitting single-pointed needles. I prefer bamboo or metal needles, just make sure you are buying straight needles and not circular needles.
Straight needles look like the image below, one end has a round stopper and the other is a blunt tip. Do not purchase needles that have tips on both ends, those are called double sided knitting needles, and are used for advanced techniques like this Knit Brioche Stitch Scarf
You needles need be 10 or 12 inches in length. This is a great size to learn a quick knit scarf pattern. You can also find longer needles, but those are better suited for sweaters and not beginner projects.

And lastly, you need a pair of scissors, any scissors you have at home that can cut the yarn will work.
For your very first pieces, I always recommend a shorter straight needle (like 9–10 inches) and a thick yarn — it helps you see your stitches clearly and feel your progress which makes the whole learning process feel a lot less stressful.
