If you’ve ever wanted to knit a thick, cozy blanket without using circular needles, this 4 strand knit blanket pattern is exactly what you need.

By holding four strands of yarn together, you create a beautifully blended unique color, with a chunky texture that works up fast. This technique is exactly like knitting with two strands of yarn, you will be treating multiple yarn strands (instead of just two) as one jumbo strand while knitting today.

What You will Need:

I pulled out a bunch of yarns from my collection- some textured bulky yarns and a couple of regular yarns for this blanket. Mostly medium worsted yarns and a large knitting needle – size 19/15mm. You will also need a pair of scissors,  and a tapestry needle.

YarnStash

Unlike my previous garter stitch blanket or stockinette stitch blanket this 4 strand knit Blanket is knit in smaller blocks that require straight needles only.

No Circular Knitting Needles = Perfect for Beginner Knitters.

Cast on 20 stitches on a size 19 needle holding four different yarns together as one.

Work in alternate knit and purl rows on these stitches – Knit one row then purl the next one. Repeat till your piece measures about 12 inches.

Cast off each block when it reaches 12 inches long.

Repeat the process and make 20 such blocks. Each block measures about 12 by 14 inches.

Lay out your blocks, arrange them to distribute the color variation.

This is a great blanket to use up all of the random balls of yarn you have accumulated. If I ran out of a particular color of yarn in the middle of a block, I simply continued the block in a new color.

Knit squares

Sew the blocks together to form a blanket.

If joining blocks is not your strength, I also have a tutorial + video showing you how to knit a chunky blanket with needles that is worked as one piece. This easy chunky rib knit throw pattern is also worked in one piece.

4 strand knit blanket Tips:

  1. Always knit all strands together, don’t accidentally drop one.
  2. Check your needle size- if your fabric seems really dense, go up a size in the needle. If your fabric seems flimsy, go down a size. Swatching helps you find the perfect balance.
  3. Don’t stress about color changes- simply swap in a new color when needed to create an unique quirky blanket.

    • Hi Kimberly! Unfortunately I don’t know the exact amount of yarn I used to make this blanket. I made it a while back, and I’m pretty sure I used up all the yarn I have photographed here plus some more.

    • You are right, it wasnt working. I have no clue what happened there. I have fixed it now at my end, can you pls check and see if it is working now? Thank you so much!

    • Of course!! You would probably need to adjust the number of strands you will need, but a smaller needle would work fine too.
