🧶 What You’ll Need
- Yarn: 5–6 skeins of super bulky yarn (weight 6). I’ve used 5 skeins of Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn. This Fisherman colorway is a nice soft cream color that makes a perfect neutral colored baby blanket.
- Hook: Size N (9 mm) is the recommended yarn label hook, but I’ve sized up and used a 12mm ergonomic crochet hook. This creates a airier stitch as bulky blankets tend to get heavy and dense otherwise.
- Scissors & yarn needle for finishing ends
Tip: Choose a soft, squishy yarn that feels good in your hands and in a color you love, it makes crocheting even more enjoyable!

💕 How to Crochet a Single Crochet Chunky Blanket Step by Step:
Step 1: Start with foundation chain.
Decide how wide you want your blanket to be, and make a starting chain that matches that width. For a baby blanket size, begin with a chain of 75. If you’re new to chaining, here’s a quick how to chain in crochet tutorial to help you get started.

Step 2: Work the first row.
Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook and make a single crochet, chain 1, skip one chain and repeat. Not sure how? My how to single crochet for beginners tutorial walks you through each step slowly.

Step 3: Keep going!
Chain one, turn your work, and continue in pattern one sc, one chain. That’s the rhythm. Once your row comes to the end, turn and repeat, You’ll start to see a lovely texture form as you go.

Step 4: Finishing touches.
Once your blanket reaches the length you love, fasten off and weave in your yarn ends. I like to use a slip stitch at the edge for a neat finish before cutting the yarn. You can leave it simple or add a cute border if you’re feeling fancy.
