How wide should a Crochet Headband be?
A typical Crochet Headband should measure around 4 inches wide. You can always make them wider or skinnier if that is your preference.
How do you Crochet a Thick Headband?
Today’s pattern will create a Thick and Warm headband because we are using a super bulky yarn. To follow along this Free Crochet Headband Pattern you will need a #6 Super Bulky yarn like Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn (the color I used here is called Blossom) and a N 10mm crochet hook. You don’t need much yarn at all, in fact yarn scraps will work fine here!

This Crochet Headband uses an easy Crochet Moss Stitch that I have used before to make a scarf. The patter for the head band is
- Chain 10
- Row 1: Sc into fourth chain from hook, *Ch1, skip 1 ch in foundation row, sc* -3 times.
- Row 2: Turn. Ch2. *Sc into the ch-1 space below, ch1* -3 times, sc into the ch3 space below.
- Row 3: Turn. Ch2. *Sc into the ch-1 space below, ch1* – 3 times, sc into the ch2 turning space.
Repeat Row 3 to grow your headband.
For an Adult Size: Work till you reach a length of 18 to 20 inches.
For a Child Size: Work till you reach a length of 16 to 18 inches.
Fold work in half, and crochet the edges together with a single crochet to make headband.
Here is another version of this Free Crochet Headband Pattern I made using a variegated yarn called Astroland. I love the subtle color changes of this!
Here are the two crochet headbands side by side- this stitch has a little bit of give and stretches nicely. The yarn is cozy and warm and makes for a great ear warmer/ head band. I personally like using a variegated yarn for this, but my daughter asked for a pink one- and a mom knows better than to argue with a tween 😉
Notes:
This free crochet pattern for a headband can very easily used to make a wider headband: Start with a Ch 12 or Ch 14 and repeat the ** portion of the pattern extra times.
