Hello Hello! If you are on the go all weekend and need a small project to carry around in the car this easy double crochet scarf is the perfect thing to make! And all you need is a single skein of yarn and your crochet hook.

This pretty yellow scarf was literally made in the car. I crocheted this easy double crochet scarf in between dance pick ups and birthday party drop offs last weekend- it was a busy weekend for the kids! This scarf is a great portable project, easy to complete in an hour or two. They are addictive to make, which is great because they make easy handmade gifts!

Video Tutorial:

I have a quick overview video showing how I put together this easy double crochet scarf . Watch the video by clicking on the video box below or head over to to my YouTube channel. Enjoy!

Supplies you will need:

You need just two items for this project: a crochet hook and a skein of yarn. The yarn I used today is the Lion Brand Scarfie Yarn. This yarn is so soft to the touch and I loved crocheting with it. It comes in so many gorgeous colorways- I warn you, it’s difficult to choose just one. You can find all the colors here. I’ve bought the Cream/Mustard and Silver/Charcoal colors till now and they are beautiful.

Instead of using the recommended hook size though, I used this size P 11.5mm hook and crocheted the entire scarf with three strands of the yarn held together- in this new trick I saw in Facebook! This is what makes this scarf a quick project.

3 Strand Yarn Trick:

So the other day I shared this amazing video by Brianna K which shows a simple way to crochet with three strands of yarn from a single skein. The video is easy to understand and I was able to figure out how to do it quickly! Once you learn this brilliant hack you will want to use it all the time!

Here is the pattern for today’s easy double crochet scarf.

The entire scarf is crocheted in the round and you will need one skein of Lion Brand Scarfie yarn.

With the size P 11.5mm hook, chain 100 holding 3 strands of yarn together (see the Tips and Tricks above). Join in a circle with a slip stitch, making sure that your chains are not twisted (100 chains)

Chain 2, dc (double crochet) in the back loop only of each and every stitch. Join with a slip stitch (100 dcs). Repeat this round 4 more times or until you run out yarn.

Fasten off and weave in the ends with a blunt needle.

Let’s Start our scarf:

With three strands of yarn held together as one, using a 11.5 mm P hook chain 100. Form a loop by joining to the first chain with a slip stitch. This entire scarf is crocheted in the circle.

Remember that the three strands represent a single bulky yarn and you should consider that as one stitch only.

The gauge for this scarf makes the scarf work up quickly. Each double crochet stitch is approximately 1inch tall and two double crochets together are approximately an inch wide together.

The beauty of using Brianna’s hack, this variegated yarn maintains its different colors. Without this idea, I would have needed to split one skein of yarn into 3 smaller balls, and held a strand of yarn from each ball together and crocheted. But that would have mixed the color dispersion of the yarn. But with this hack, the color pools beautifully!

At the end of the round, while joining using a slip stitch, make sure you are joining to the 1st dc and not to the top of the chain 2. That chain 2 is for height only.

I love how I started with the yellow color but ended the round with the white. So pretty! That Scarfie yarn comes in many many beautiful colorways I tell ya.

The entire scarf is made with double crochets that are done in the back loop only. What this does is create a nice ridge that is an added extra detail. If you are beginner, don’t try to figure out what a double crocheting in the back loop means- instead just make the entire scarf with your normal double crochets and follow the pattern. It will still turn out beautiful!

All done!

And as simple as that our easy double crochet scarf is done! I am so happy with how it turned out and I love this colorway absolutely!

The final scarf measures approximately 5inches wide by 60 inches long.

  • The chain 100 to begin with is a flexible number. I would suggest you chain 90, wrap it around your neck to estimate if you like the length and then decide if you need more chains.
  • On that note, if you have 101 chains instead of 100- don’t sweat! A scarf is not a sweater and if it is a bit bigger it won’t be a bad thing at all.
  • The beginning chain 2 of each round is not considered as a dc. This is just to add height. To join, make a slip stitch into the 1st actual dc stitch.
  • If you prefer to not crochet in the round: Make this scarf as follows: Ch 102, double crochet in the back loop in the second chain from hook and then each and every chain till the end of the row. Turn. (ch 2, double crochet in the back loop of each stitch)- repeat () 3 more times. Fasten off. Join shorter ends of the scarf with a slip stitch or blunt needle for form infinity scarf.
  • To make this scarf for the guys in your life: Follow the pattern just mentioned, do not join to to form infinity loop. The Lion brand Scarfie has some GREAT colorways for men. Like this Ochre/Navy, Taupe/Charcoal or  Silver/Charcoal.
