What Is a Double Crochet Stitch?
A double crochet (often abbreviated as dc) is a tall stitch that allows your projects to grow faster, making it a favorite for afghans, shawls, and wearable projects.
It is a much quicker stitch which creates a lighter fabric in comparison to the single crochet. Here’s a helpful tutorial if you need to refresh How To Single Crochet For Beginners Video.

How To Double Crochet Step by Step Tutorial
Start with a foundation chain of about 10 stitches. Here is a helpful tutorial that shows How To Start A Crochet Chain for Beginners. In this tutorial I’m using a L 8mm hook with Loops and Threads Charisma yarn in Sage

Step 1: Yarn Over
Wrap the yarn over your hook from back to front.

Step 2: Insert Your Hook
Next, insert your hook into the third chain from hook.

Step 3: Pull Up A Loop
Pull the yarn through the chain to create a new loop on your hook. You should now have a total of three loops on your hook.

Step 4 + 5: Yarn Over & Pull Through Two
Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
You’ll now have two loops left.

Step 6 + 7: Yarn Over & Pull Through Two Again
Yarn over one last time and pull through the remaining two loops.
✨ That’s one double crochet stitch!

Repeat steps 1 to 7 again to create your second stitch in the next chain

And then continue creating dcs into each each to complete your first row.

Turning Chains for Double Crochet
When starting a new row of double crochet, you’ll usually chain 2 or 3 stitches before turning your work. For thinner yarns, you will need 3 chains but for bulkier yarns 2 chains might suffice.

NOTE: This turning chain counts as your first double crochet in most patterns, unless the pattern says otherwise.
Repeat till you have a small sample swatch

counting Your Dcs
Below is a quick explanation showing how to count your dcs in your swatch. To create a neat edged rectangle or square make sure you are not making extra stitches or losing any stitches. It is critical to maintain the same number stitches in each row.

FAQs
Do you yarn over for double crochet?
Yes, you yarn over before inserting your hook into your work.
What are common double crochet mistakes?
A common mistake occurs with the turning chain. Always remember to create a turning chain of 2 or 3 ch that matches the height of your dc. Count this as the first stitch of the row. Remember to treat this as the last stitch of the next row, and do not skip creating a new stitch at the top of the turning chain.
How many chains do you do for a double crochet?
I generally use 2 chains. I tend to crochet loosely and 3 chains create a loose edge for me. So I prefer to use a 2 ch at turning.
Does a double crochet use more yarn?
Not really. Compared to sc, the dc creates a different fabric, but the yarn usage is not more. The fabric is lighter instead with more space between stitches.

The best way to learn how to double crochet is by using it in a simple project. Try making a small square or follow along with a beginner-friendly pattern to build your confidence. Let me know if run into any trouble or have feedback for me, I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
