This moss stitch crochet scarf pattern uses the moss stitch, often referred to as the granite stitch, that is a simple to master stitch. I have used this moss stitch to make my temperature blanket and also this free crochet tablet holder pattern.

What you will need:

- YARN: I used 2 skeins of Wool Ease Thick and Quick. I chose a variegated yarn and the one I used is called Astroland. This is an acrylic and wool mix, super bulky yarn weight.
- CROCHET HOOK: I used a 10mm size N crochet hook for my scarf, even though the yarn label called for a 9mm. I felt the crochet swatch was better with a size up hook. The Bamboo hooks I have come from this inexpensive set I got online. These passed through TSA easily if you were wondering Can You Take Crochet Hooks on an Airplane? Abbreviations used (US) : chain = ch, sc= single crochet
If you are a new crocheter, you will need to know how to make a slip knot, how to start your crochet chain and how to single crochet for beginners. This scarf is very beginner-friendly!

We work this moss stitch crochet scarf over an even number of starting chain stitches.
Row 1: (rs) Ch 12 stitches, sc in the 4th ch from the hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in the next ch; repeat from * to end, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, sc in the next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc in the next chain space; repeat from * to end, finishing with an sc in the ch-3 sp at the start of Row 1, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, sc in the next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc in the next ch-1 sp; repeat from * to end, finishing with an sc in the ch-2 sp at the start of the previous row, turn.
Repeat Row 3 until you have a scarf that is long enough
You basically sc into all of the chain spaces
You will need approximately 2 skeins of yarn for this scarf. This guide explains a few different ways of joining yarn in crochet will help you add a new ball seamlessly.
This moss stitch crochet scarf was such a joy to work on. Since the yarn was super bulky it creates this beautiful texture that is great to look at. And I loved the simple joy of a repeat stitch pattern on this scarf. The entire scarf looks like to be make with different colors without any color changes!
My finished scarf measured approximately 4.5 inches wide and about 80+ inches long.
if you want a wider scarf:
To make a wider 6-inch scarf, start with a Chain 14 instead of 12. You might then need more than 2 skiens of yarn to complete a long scarf.
Optional: Easily add a fringe to your scarf and elevate it to higher level!

I love sharing crochet patterns to carry around while you travel. I took this skein of yarn with me on my flight recently and this scarf was great to keep me occupied. The pattern works up quickly and has basically a one-line pattern to remember. So this moss stitch crochet scarf makes the perfect project to carry around on the go or for relaxing in front of a tv show.
