Learning to make a crochet flat circle is one of the most useful beginner skills. Today I’m sharing a crochet flat circle written pattern, step-by-step instructions, and a video tutorial so you can follow along with confidence.
A crochet circle is an important crochet skill, just like the basic granny square pattern. Once you understand the simple increase formula to make a crochet flat circle, you can use it to make crochet coasters, hats, bags, and even blankets.

What You’ll Need
- Yarn of your choice. Here I have used the Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn in colorway Fisherman
- To create a tight circle, I’ve used the H8, 5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
How to Crochet Flat Circle Step by Step
Stitches you will need to know- how to make a slip knot, how to chain (ch) and how to double crochet (dc). I’ve linked beginner friendly tutorials if you are a new crocheter or need a quick refresher.
When working in dc, the increase formula is simple:
- Round 1: 12 stitches (12 st)
- Round 2: Increase in every stitch (24st)
- Round 3: 1 stitch, 1 increase (36st)
- Round 4: 2 stitches, 1 increase (48 st)
- Round 5: 3 stitches, 1 increase (60st)

Each round increases by 12 stitches, because we started with 12 stitches in our first round.

This consistent pattern keeps your circle flat. Download my free crochet printables to help keep track of your rounds/ row.

Watching the increases in action really helps this pattern, especially if you are visual learner like me.
A common problem with crochet circles is curling. This crochet flat circle pattern avoids the curl by keeping the increases methodical and even. This crochet flat circle forms the base of my free crochet plant pot cover pattern where you will learn how to add side “walls” to your circle and make a basket like shape.
