What Kind Of Yarn Do You Use To Knit Dishcloths?

To make a handmade dishcloth, you want to use 100% cotton yarn. The fabric you create will then be absorb water well, last long and fell soft to the touch while using it.

Today I have a Loops and Threads Everyday Cotton Yarn in the colors pewter, key lime and aqua. I’ll be using these for my tutorial but you can easily substitute with these yarns too Lily Sugar n Cream Yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton or any other cotton yarn. I recently also saw a really soft yarn at Walmart called Mainstays 100% Cotton Yarn that would work here too.

What Are The Best Knitting Needles For Dishcloths?

You will need a pair of straight knitting needles in the size that is specified with the yarn you use. According to the label of the yarn I have, I’m using a pair of Size 4.5mm Bamboo Straight Needles.

What Is The Best Stitch For Knitting Dishcloths?

Any stitch that will not curl is best for making a dishcloth. A moss or double moss stitch is a great option. Stitches that have some texture like the ones I used in these Half Linen Stitch Blanket, Garter Stitch Blanket or Modified Waffle Knit Stitch work well too.

How Many Stitches Do You Cast On For A Knitted Dishcloth?

All of these Knitted Dishcloth Patterns Free will create a fabric that is roughly 8 by 8 inches in size. You will need to cast on 35 or 36 stitches, depending on whether your pattern needs an even or odd number stitches.

You need to know just the one basic knit stitch and repeat it over and over again to create a soft, ridge like pattern that creates a reversible fabric. This fabric is great for larger projects like this Garter Stitch Blanket

  • Cast on 35
  • Row 1: Knit all stitches
  • Repeat Row 1 till fabric measures 8 inches and cast off knitwise

Slow to knit, the Double Moss Stitch is like an offset ribbing stitch that creates a reversal fabric with beautiful texture. You need to move the working yarn back and forth between each knit and purl and hence this is a slower stitch.

  • Cast on 36
  • Row 1 and 4, K1, *P1, K1* to end
  • Row 2 and 3: P1, *K1, P1* to end
  • Repeat Rows 1 to 4 till fabric measures 8 inches and cast off knitwise

Two Stitch Check or Double Seed Stitch Pattern

This interesting yet easy to master stitch pattern is known by many names. It is called Two Stitch Check, or Double Seed Stitch, Irish Moss Stitch or Box Stitch and some often. mistake this to be a Double Moss stitch and call it that too.

  • Cast on 36
  • Row 1 and 2: *K2, P2* to end
  • Row 3 and 4: *P2, K2* to end 
  • Repeat Rows 1 to 4 till fabric measures 8 inches and cast off knitwise
