Painting snowflakes with watercolor is a calm, relaxing art project that never gets old. No two snowflakes are identical in nature itself, so there is no pressure to make them “perfect”. So get ready with your sketchbook and watercolors and let’s paint!

Painting Snowflakes Step by Step Tutorial
Snowy days are the best time to create a winter painting in your sketchbook. Painting snowflakes is an easy and forgiving art activity. And the end results are so satisfying! There are many ways you can draw a snowflake, and you can choose any design of your choice.
- Start by painting 4 intersecting lines with water onto your sketch paper.
- Dilute blue watercolor paint generously with water and drop this watery paint color onto the outer edges of the lines.
- Add small V shapes at the end of each segment. Drop in more diluted watercolors.
- Paint another V shape onto each segment using a darker blue color paint.

This watercolor technique of dropping paint color onto water instead of dry paper allows the pigment to spread and blend in an airy fashion creating unique snowflakes.

Here is another way to paint snowflakes.
- Start by painting 3 intersecting lines with water. Here I’ve colored the water a bit so that you can see it better in this tutorial.
- Draw an inverted V shape between each intersecting area.
- Start dropping color onto the lines. You only need to touch the paint brush to the water lightly for the color to spread.
- Add V shapes onto each line segment and a round circle onto the edge of each segment to finish off your snowflake!

Painting snowflakes puts you in a calm mood, with each brushstroke you relax more and let the snowflake come to life. This is an art project that is so much fun for not just adults but kids of all ages. After painting snowflakes, you can learn how to paint a winter scene next!
