Black paper instantly adds so much drama and depth to your work. Instead of starting with white paper, you’re working the opposite which seems so unique and almost magical! Art on black paper is especially great for- high contrast designs, night scenes and metallic or shimmery artwork. You could also try painting galaxies on black paper!

You will need to choose materials that show up well on dark surfaces.

To create this watercolor painting on black paper you will need to use paint that is not transparent, so not your usual watercolors.

I used these Paul Rubens Artist Watercolor Paints-Glitter Solid Colors, paint that is not transparent and look beautiful on black paper! The sketchbook I used is a black paper dot journal by Archer and Olive.

The beauty of this paint is that as it dries, it becomes opaque and shimmery on the page. You use them as watercolors, but they work on black papers too! And you only need to apply a little paint for it work.

After painting the first few flowers, I figured out that you want to add just a little water to the paint cakes. You don’t want watery color on your paintbrush, you want the color to be thick and nice on the paper.

You can see below how you can even see a dark color like purple on black paper here! It takes a minute, but when it dries it looks so pretty!

Working only with lighter colors was a new to me, and I enjoyed trying it. I want to try this watercolor on black paper technique using this Canson Black Mixed Media pad next!

I have also had great results with Gansai Tambi Watercolors on black paper, I absolutely love the gold!

I was surprised to see that the himi gouache paints also show up beautifully on black paper!

Tips for Successful Art on Black Paper

  • Test colors on a scrap piece first — they often dry darker than expected
