Today I am sharing an easy 1 hour Granny stitch beanie pattern that is simple and colorful. Remember those two Caron Cupcake hats I made the other day? Well, I had quite a bit of yarn leftover and am using it here today.

Granny Stitch Beanie Pattern

SUPPLIES USED:

For this Granny Stitch Beanie Pattern,

  • I used about half a skein of Caron Cupcakes yarn in colorway Sweet Berries. I love the look this self-striping yarn creates for this hat.
  • I used the recommended size G 4.00mm hook- I’m using the Clover crochet hooks, You gotta love how colorful they are!

granny stitch beanie pattern tutorial:

If you are a new crocheter, you will need to know how to make a slip knothow to start your crochet chain and be familiar with the basic granny square pattern

Start with a simple magic ring and increase to form a circle. If you haven’t done this before, I have a previous post with a video tutorial showing how to crochet coasters which has a very similar start.

If you find that the colors are not changing at the end of a round- optionally you can cut off the excess yarn left of that color off the skein, and then join the new color at the start of the round. I know many people do this!

I let the yarn stripe as it wanted, with color changes in the middle of the round and all. I just wanted to finish up the yarn and make a hat that looked cute. I really did not have enough yarn to manage the color pooling. But in the end, it all works out and I love how nice the colors all look together!

Repeat Round #5 till you reach the required length. I had a total of 19 rounds from start to finish, and this makes an adult-sized crochet beanie.

Child Size:

For a child-size, omit round #11 increase and adjust the length accordingly. You will probably only need 15 rounds of length.

Granny Stitch Beanie Pattern Tips

  • This is the perfect project to use up all your little leftover yarn scraps. I used just half a skein of self-striping yarn here today, but you could totally use 3 or 4 different colored yarn bits to make this.
  • This is also the perfect little project to take with you on the go. It is small, portable and travels well as a car project.
  • If you have just two colors of yarn leftover from some previous project, simply use this pattern and alternate the colors.
  • Add a round of single crochet as the last round using a contrasting color add a touch of drama and finish it off nicely. Here is tutorial that shows the single crochet stitch
  • Each Caron cupcake skein of yarn comes with a pom-pom, that’s the main reason I bought it, and a pom-pom on this little hat would look super cute! I used up the pom-pom for my previous hat though so had none left for this.
  • This is a super quick project! You can easily make it in an hour or two if you are a beginner. I love projects that I can start on the weekends and complete before Monday arrives- and this one is the perfect example.

When it comes to creating hats- crochet is always my best friend. I like how it’s easy to make a circle and I love that this hat comes together from top to bottom. This way, I can kinda wear the hat midway and make sure it fits and all. Check out more crochet wearables on my blog and find your next project idea!

You can quickly whip this one up as a gift. And best of all, you only need 1/2 a skein of yarn for this project and you can use leftover odd balls of yarn!

  1. I am trying to use your pattern because I like this the way this looks, feels and wears for comfort.. It would be very helpful if you could put the total number of stitches or clusters for each row. Thank you
