Caron Sugar Cakes Yarn Review
This bulky weight yarn brings vibrant color transitions and a soft texture to your hook or needles. I picked up a couple of skeins in two different colorways- Lollipop and Blue Meringues. I loved the blue aqua tones in these skeins of Caron Sugar Cakes Yarn.

Caron Sugar Cakes Yarn – First Impressions:
Right off the shelf, the color curation is the standout feature. The palette combinations feel modern, soft, and balanced, avoiding the overly harsh contrasts that sometimes make striping cakes tricky to design around.

- Softness: This is an 100% acrylic yarn, yet unlike some scratchier budget acrylics, Caron Sugar Cakes Yarn has a surprisingly soft, cozy hand feel right off the cake, making it comfortable for wearables that sit next to the skin.
- Center Pull Convenience: You can work from the outside or pull smoothly from the center. Pulling from the center keeps the cake stable on your work table and lets the colors reveal themselves in their natural sequence.
- Color Transitions: The color changes in each skein is not self striping. Most of the yarn has a thread of off white twisted. But all of the different colors flow naturally from one shade to the next- in fact each color blends beautifully into the next with no harsh in between color. I tried multiple different stitches to create a planned pooling In crochet effect but was unsuccessful. This yarn simply does not stripe or color pool.
- Splitting: The yarn features a smooth twist that minimizes splitting, making it beginner friendly and smooth. Your crochet hook does not get caught in the plies and you can crochet super easily.
Caron Sugar Cakes Yarn Swatch Tests
Before diving into a full project, working up a quick test swatch is the best way to see how your Caron Sugar Cakes yarn truly behaves.
- Hook & Needle Sizing:Â
Sticking with the recommended L 8mm crochet hook, I used a simple double crochet here, the fabric has a right amount of flexibility. Here is a helpful post showing How To Double Crochet For Beginners.

I also tried a blanket with a dc, sc cluster, but the fabric had a camouflage kind of look, and I did not like the color distribution.

I totally love how the colors of the Caron Sugar Cakes yarn worked up in this continuous crochet square blanket pattern. To get a flowy drape I went up a size in hook and used a P 11mm hook.

For my knitting swatch, I used the recommended size 11, 8mm needles and felt the colors moved much better as a scarf!

Pros and Cons
I only see pros in this yarn. I was satisfied beyond expectations!
- Generous Yardage: At 328 yards per cake, you can complete smaller accessories or winter garments with very few cakes.
- Easy Care: Being 100% acrylic, it is durable, machine washable, and dryable
- Quick to Work Up: The bulky weight ensures fast, satisfying progress for weekend projects.
Best Project Ideas
- Winter Accessories: Oversized slouchy beanies, thick cowls, and chunky mittens.
- Blankets and Throws: The colorways create effortless color variation in lap blankets or decorative throws without needing to weave in endless ends.
- Home Decor: Textured throw pillows or chunky baskets.
