Learn how to use scrap watercolor paper for cards with this easy paper punch technique! Turn paint test swatches into a beautiful handmade grid card layout.
Have you noticed how popular watercolor textures have become in scrapbooking and card making? I love seeing fine art techniques embraced in paper crafting, especially with beautiful collections like Dear Lizzy’s Neapolitan and Amy Tangerine’s Sketchbook.
Long before I started scrapbooking, I was a fine artist. I’ve spent countless hours with canvases, brushes, and paints, so bringing paint to paper crafts always feels natural and refreshing.
While I don’t always have time for a full-scale painting session, I recently pulled out my craft paints, brushes, and palettes to experiment in my studio. Instead of throwing away my paint test sheets, I turned those colorful swatches into a handmade grid card using simple paper punches.
Why Save Your Watercolor Scraps?
Before tossing out watercolor swatch tests or unfinished abstract pages, look closely at the color transitions. Painting directly onto heavy watercolor paper creates rich gradients and organic textures that are impossible to duplicate with standard patterned cardstock.
Supplies Needed:
- Scrap watercolor paper or color test sheets
- Craft watercolor paints and brushes. Here are simple watercolor for beginners that you can try.
- Square paper punch
- Cardstock card base & sentiment stamp
How to use scrap watercolor paper for cards Step by step
Here is how to use scrap watercolor paper for cards step by step. This is a simple tutorial and you can create many variations!
1. Save Your Paint Swatches: Keep the watercolor paper you use to test color mixes, blend shades, or wipe off excess paint from your brushes.
2. Punch Out Shapes: Use a square paper punch (or any geometric shape like circles or hexagons) to punch out individual pieces from the most vibrant sections of your scrap sheet.
3. Assemble the Grid Collage: Arrange the punched watercolor squares into a clean grid pattern on a neutral card base. Leaving a small gap between each square creates a polished tile effect.
4. Add Finishing Touches: Frame the card base with a thin border and add a simple sentiment stamp to complete the design.
