Modern art Ganesha painting tutorial

This project combines acrylic paint with slight texture and mixed media elements to create a vibrant and spiritual piece of art.

For this painting I use a whole bunch of Liquitex paints on a 20 by 24 inch gallery wrapped canvas. Choose a large canvas if you want to make a bold statement piece of art.

1. Prepare the Canvas & Base Texture Start by sketching the basic silhouette of Ganesha on your canvas. Here is I tutorial I have written on How to Draw Ganesha Step by Step in a Sketchbook. To create the unique 3D texture seen in the background and on Ganesha’s ornaments, apply a modeling paste or texture gel. You can use stencils for geometric patterns or freehand the details of the jewelry and crown. Let this dry completely before moving to the next step.

2. Layer the Background Colors Apply a base layer of acrylics to the background. Using a sponge or a large brush, blend deep blues, teals, and greens. The goal is to create a rich, mottled effect that allows some of the texture underneath to catch the light.

3. Painting the Ganesha Figure Focus on Ganesha’s skin and form. Use warm tones like yellows, oranges, and reds to make the figure pop against the cool background. Blend these colors smoothly to show the contours of the trunk and face.

4. Detail the Ornaments and Crown Once the base colors are dry, use metallic acrylics (like gold or bronze) to highlight the textured areas you created in step one. Use a dry brush technique to lightly skim over the raised textures of the jewelry, bells, and crown, making them stand out.

5. Add Highlights and Finishing Touches Define the eyes and finer details with a small detail brush. Add white or bright yellow highlights to the edges of the figure and ornaments to create depth. Finally, add any decorative elements like the lotus flower or small patterns in the background to complete the composition.

There are hidden typography elements in this Ganesha Painting- like numbers, an ampersand and newsprint. This is who I am right now and I brought a little me into the painting as well. It’s a wonderful demonstration of how texture can add a whole new dimension to a traditional subject.
