This painting was born out of a sketch I made a few years back so I encourage you to draw your own unique sketch. And here is a tutorial that can help guide you on how to draw Ganesha step by step in a sketchbook
- First, the canvas is primed with white paint and then after that dries the Ganesha design is sketched onto it.
- Add outlines using regular white twine. Apply glue and then guide the twine sit along the glue lines and dry in position. This relief work really stands out on this canvas!

3. Add thicker details by shaping a dough, rolling it, adding impressions and glueing it onto the canvas. The soft dough is made by mixing – 1 part chalk powder, 1 part plaster of paris with just enough white glue and a splash of water if needed. Knead to make a smooth dough.
4. Use rich, bright, vibrant colors, mix and paint onto the canvas. I love thick acrylic paints and an angled brush to move the paints along and around the twine formations.
For the shading and variation in color I used gelatos which have a rich color pigment. I often find myself using just a dab of water on my fingertips to rub the gelato pigment into the canvas. Here is more info on how to use Faber Castell gelatos easily
All of the 3d details of the Ganesha overflow onto the gallery wrapped edges of the canvas.
