Unboxing Posca Pens: First Impressions
I recently splurged and bought this 16 set markers https://amzn.to/461Z6Lf. You can also just buy this set of 8 markers instead to test them out first and see if you like them.
Right out of the box, Posca pens feel thoughtfully designed. Each pen has a solid, comfortable barrel and a brush-style tip that immediately suggests flexibility. The marker barrel is slightly bigger than I’m used to but wonderful to work with.
I was drawn to the beautiful earthy tones of this set of markers.
How to use posca pens for the first time?
When using the pens for the first time, you need to shake the marker barrel vigorously to get the paint moving. Then you press down on the tip multiple times until the paint flows. I have the brush tip but these are also available with a broad bullet tip for typical marker art. I love creating brush pen drawings so this fit my style better.
You will need to do this to each and every marker. Here is a quick look at all of the colors in this set.
Sketchbook Test: How Posca Pens Perform on Paper
To really understand how a posca pen works, I tested them directly in my sketchbook rather than on loose paper. I used a thicker mixed media sketchbook page to give the paint ink enough support.
The paint flows smoothly once activated. The brush tip allows you to color large areas quickly.
The paint surprisingly dries super quick! I have used acrylic paint on paper many times, and using these markers is a similar experience.
I was able to quickly doodle flowers on top of the dried first layer of paint. I love how even the light colors show up on the dark layer.
Here is my finished sketchbook page. My favorite part of this set hands down is the white marker! I love how the while lines make the rest of the colors pop. Here are the best metallic markers I have used to add a little shimmer to your finished page.

What I Loved
- The paint marker come has opaque pigments in a variety of vibrant colors
- Flexible brush tip for expressive drawing
- Easy layering and quick drying times
- Works well for a multitude of themes- florals, nature, potraits etc
Things to Keep in Mind
- The 160gsm Archer and Olive Notebooks pages pilled easily. Thicker paper meant for mixed media works best.
- Ink can show through thinner sketchbook pages
- Requires shaking and priming before use.
- Am not sure how long the tips will stay pointy and sharp.
Final Thoughts: Are Posca Pens Worth it?
After unboxing and testing these posca paint markers in my sketchbook, I am totally impressed. The brush tip allows for coverage of large area as well as precision work. These paint markers works on different types of materials. The white marker itself has quickly become an essential tool for my creative works.
