The good news is yes—you can usually crochet on a plane! I’ll share what crochet tools I take, how to pack your crochet project for travel, and simple tips for crocheting comfortably while flying.

Can You Crochet on a Plane?

Most airlines allow crochet hooks in both carry-on and checked luggage, which means you can keep your project with you during the flight and work on it whenever you like. However, there are a few important rules to follow, especially when it comes to scissors and other small tools.

To make things easy at airport security:

• Keep your crochet tools in one small pouch, that way if needed you can easily pull it out at security check.
• Avoid packing loose hooks at the bottom of your bag
• Bring only what you need for one project, not multiples!

What crochet hook can I take on a plane?

Plastic, bamboo, and metal crochet hooks are all commonly accepted, and most crocheters have no issues bringing them through security.

That said, rules can vary slightly depending on airport or country, so it’s always smart to:

• Pack hooks together so they’re easy to inspect if needed
• Carry a backup hook
• Leave rare, expensive or sentimental hooks at home

I personally prefer to carry plastic hooks or wooden hooks when planning to crochet on airplane trips, and never carry my favorite ergonomic hooks because I do not want to lose them. I also carry a hook and a spare, because it is too easy for a hook to get lost in an airplane seat and then you are stuck with nothing to do.

What about crochet scissors on a plane?

Scissors are where things get a little tricky.

Small scissors may be allowed in carry-on hand luggage if the blades are short, but ultimately airport security has the final say. If you want to avoid any chance of trouble when you crochet on airplane flights, consider safer alternatives like this Folding travel scissors, a Nail clipper or Yarn cutter pendants

From the Transportation Security Administration website: scissors must have blades shorter than 4 inches (measured from the pivot point)

If you’re traveling with regular or larger scissors, it’s best to pack them in your checked luggage instead.

What to Pack for Crochet on Airplane Travel

When space is limited, packing smart makes all the difference. Choose small crochet projects to work on, and make sure to either print or save your pattern onto your phone. I carry partial skeins of yarn, my hooks and a small folded scissors. Keeping everything in one place makes it easy to pull out your project once you’re settled into your seat and I like to pack everything into a zipper pouch.
