12 Easy Quilt Blocks for Beginners

I love quilting. It’s one of my big new loves of crafting. I love that we can play with color so easily with prints in a color. So here are my Quilt block a month goal!

But really, I have made only two quilts in recent years- one for each daughter- and I made those during the last few weeks of my pregnancies. Because I was in big-time nesting mode then 🙂

I really would love to sew more, and have more quilts around the house. I love to hand quilt, as that gives me something to do while watching tv/movies at night with the hubby. I have tons of fabric/sewing/quilting ideas that I love on Pinterest. I have seen some amazing color combos, techniques, and patterns; and every time I tell myself “Someday I would love to make a quilt like that!” (don’t we all do that ?)

Well, for 2012 I have a new goal. To sew more. Use that sewing machine on fabric rather than on paper (for my scrapbooking layouts). Learn new techniques, design new patterns, and in general, explore the quilting world a little bit more.

Now I don’t promise that I will be perfect.

But for each month this year, I will be sewing a unique quilt block. My take on some traditional and some not-so-traditional block patterns.

Quilt Block a Month: 12 Easy Ideas

January:

To begin with, here is this month’s block: a Chevron patterned block (or a herringbone pattern)

February:

For the second block of the year, I have an Asymmetrical log cabin block

March:

So for this months block, already the third block of the year, I have a traditional flying geese pattern- but I chose to make it a multicolored one

April:

I have a scrappy block– something to use up all and any of those fabric scraps in your stash

May:

The fifth block of the year, I have a scrappy block– something to use up all and any of those fabric scraps in your stash

June:

I tried my hand at something new and adventurous and designed a whole new block for myself.

July:

Its a simple patchwork block, but I played with the colors and had fun!

August:

August’s block was all about sewing triangles from squares.

September:

Did you know that September is National Sewing Month? There is a chill in the air, and the days aren’t so busy anymore, so it’s the perfect time to sit and catch up on some sewing.
